The Ofrenda Project was carried out in 2022 with various women from Oaxaca who, like me, move between the Arts and Crafts. The result honestly offers a bit of what we are and what we do in our daily lives for our beloved Earth 💗 It was originally intended for an exhibition in Mexico City that ended up not being exhibited. The women who participated were Nadia López García @nadiaitasavi with the poem "Ofrenda", Itzel Gutiérrez @mamiferomx and friends, with textiles dyed with plants, flowers, seeds and elements, Sheredy Concha @arcadia.taller with embroidery with indigo threads and prints in movable type with gold powders, Brenda Río @agua.de.rio.oaxaca with ceramic pieces and Ivonne Bautista @ivonne_bautista_rojas, a Mexican sign artist. The final result was textile pieces, a ceramic installation and some prints in movable type with gold powders.
A selection of three textile pieces from the Ofrenda Project dyed with plants, flowers and seeds, made in collaboration with various women, is now available at @mariasarteydiseno. These pieces represent an emotional and material dialogue with the abundant garden that accompanied me during the year I lived in San Agustín Etla, Oaxaca (2022) and with the reading of the magical book A Braid of Sacred Grass: Indigenous Knowledge, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer, biologist and professor of the Potawatomi Nation… “In ceremonies, berries are always present. They join us in a wooden bowl. A large bowl and a ladle, which go around the entire circle so that each person can taste their sweetness, remember the gifts, and give thanks. They carry within them the teaching passed on to us by our ancestors, the notion that the bounty of the earth is given to us in a single bowl and with a single spoon. We all eat from the same bowl that Mother Earth has filled for us. And that doesn't just speak to the fruits, but also to the bowl itself. The earth's gifts are to be shared, but they are not unlimited. The earth's bounty doesn't imply an invitation to appropriate everything. Every bowl has a bottom. When it's gone, it's gone. And there's only one spoon, the same size for everyone. How do we refill the empty bowl? Is our gratitude enough? The berries teach us otherwise. The bushes open their blanket of gifts and offer their sweet fruits to birds and bears and children alike, but the transaction doesn't end there. Something beyond gratitude is asked of us. The berries trust us to keep our end of the bargain and disperse their seeds so they continue to expand, something that is good for both the berries and the children. They remind us that all flourishing is mutual. We need the berries, and the berries need us. Our care multiplies their gifts, and our neglect endangers them. We are united in a pact of reciprocity, an agreement of mutual responsibility to support those who support us. This is how the empty bowl is filled.
