This beautiful type of clay is produced in Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca. Ayuujk (Mixe) women in a pottery workshop use an ancestral technique that protects nature. Therefore, it is not a mass-produced product; each piece is carefully designed to achieve its shape, substance, and details, ensuring harmony.
“Pottery is a traditional craft; it comes from the earth and returns to the earth,” Rufina emphasizes, justifying her love of clay pieces. She also emphasizes the importance of pottery as an artisan, as it exemplifies empowering women to earn their own money.
The finish on their pieces is "smoothed clay," obtained by rubbing a river stone to give the clay that semi-glossy, smooth finish.
Concepción, a young enthusiast, member of this talented family and a member of the younger generation of this clay workshop, has taken it upon herself to connect us with her creative approach and admirable way of preserving a traditional technique while enhancing the region in which it is produced.
