This beautiful type of clay is produced in Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca.
Ayuujk (Mixe) Clay Women is a pottery workshop that uses techniques that protect nature. It's not a mass-produced project; each piece focuses on the form, substance, and details, ensuring harmony among all of these.
“Pottery is a traditional thing; it comes from the earth and returns to the earth,” Rufina emphasizes, justifying her love of clay pieces. In addition to being a highly important figure as an artisan, she is a clear example of women's empowerment to earn their own money.
The finish on their pieces is "smoothed clay," which is obtained by rubbing a river stone to give the clay that semi-glossy, smooth finish.
Concepción is an enthusiastic young member of this talented family and part of a new generation at this clay workshop. She has been instrumental in connecting us with her creative approach and her admirable way of preserving a traditional technique, highlighting the region where it is produced.
These mezcaleros are inspired by the patterns traditionally found on Tlahuitoltepec textiles.
Dimensions: 16 cm diameter x 5 cm high.
